PROFESSIONALLY FUNNY, BAD AT SMALL TALK.

PROJECT: 'SMALL TALK' -  CAPTURING A LIVING ROOM COMEDY SPECIAL

Oh my god, heeeeeey! Long time no see, what have you been up to?

Excerpt from Small Talk, Rowan Thambar.
Filmed in Newcastle.

It's Saturday night and you're outside a family home. As you walk in, you ask someone if you should take off your shoes. You pass a few rooms, noticing a drinks station on the patio and a DJ stand set up in the corner. A couple of people are milling about, talking about the weather. There's a giant spread of home-cooked Sri Lankan food, buffet style on the kitchen counter (which will later be ranked one of your best meals to date), and someone asks how you know the host.

You notice a velvet curtain set up behind a stage in the living room, surrounded by benches and photos: all featuring one man.
We're all at what is evidently the beginnings of a house party, gathered around having a bit of small talk. At least the man is the photos is funny, his name's Rowan.

At 9pm, he looks up at you and says "happy Tom? [a nod and a thumbs up] that's a wrap on the special!", and everyone claps. Rowan said this because we had, in fact, just wrapped on his debut comedy special, which he entitled Small Talk and had beforehand asked us to produce the video for, but so sorry I've been rambling, what's new with you?

"I'm really bad at small talk, but I'm trying to get better... I think the problem is, the reason I'm bad at small talk is cause I know I'm gonna die some day... why not just say what you mean you know?"

Small talk aside, we've worked with Rowan before on his From Where You'd Rather Be mixtape release interview - some of the music of which we've included in this special in the background of the sketches - and so naturally we were very happy when he reached out to collaborate on this comedy special project.

Over coffee (after we'd covered the weather, how's everyone, what's new?), he told us how he'd already been touring with this set for a year, and to close it out he'd love to have it filmed over two nights at his childhood home for friends, family, and colleagues during a house party. Over the breakfast that had just arrived (after we'd talked about recent events and mutual friends) we discussed what the special could look like and what might be something new to bring to it. How could we add something in that would be extra interesting for a viewer at home?

We arrived at including short sketches to sprinkle between the different arcs of the set, as if to take a breath before continuing, which also provided a chance for Rowan to experiment with his own style of visual comedy. Rather than the special offering just a virtual seat at the gig, it can inject a little bit more fun, and bonus jokes for those playing along at home. With small talk and brekky concluded, over the next six months we made it happen.

"... That's why I've been trying to get better at small talk... it's like a test for me, you know, to see if I can talk about something other than myself for five minutes of a day with a stranger. And maybe if I talk about the Commonwealth Games for long enough, maybe my mate who's actually going through something, shares about what's really been going on."

Both nights went great - the laughs were big, the small talk was relatable, the reflection was wholesome and the food was beyond delicious (shoutout to Rowan's Mum). On its surface, Rowan's set is simply great comedy: tight jokes, runnings gags, insane situations, but amongst all the bits and the big laughs, it's really a comedy special about family, about finding happiness, about self-reflection, and about trying to be a better person.

For us as creative people, these are the kinds of collaborative projects that we enjoy: where everyone is passionate about what they bring to the table, where you can roll around and soundboard an idea into something that everyone finds really exciting, and at the end of the day none of it really feels like work. It's a reminder notification that we've found ourselves in the right place, and validation that there is a place for authenticity out in a world saturated in content.

It feels like you're working together to make a dream, the dream happen, and it feels good.

But if you've watched the special, then you'd already know how it is, and it's not something to bring up in small talk.

If you've got a glass of wine or some popcorn in the cupboard, you can enjoy it while watching the entire Small Talk comedy special, now on YouTube here.
